Access Hatches

Romtec Utilities pump stations have hatches that meet all safety regulations and the load requirements for the specific application. Hatches for the wet well, the valve vault and other vaults for sewage grinder or flow meter are equipped with specially designed safety grates.

All Romtec hatches are prefabricated in the top slab or cover of the wet well and vaults. The hatch designs depend on the loading (pedestrian or H-20 traffic loads). Most Romtec access hatches have aluminum doors over a steel safety grate. The doors are equipped with a locking system for security and with safety stays that prevent the door from inadvertently closing. For larger doors, pneumatic struts make lifting easier and safer.

The bright orange safety grates are commonly split into two or more sections, thus reducing the open area and reducing the risk of falls. All safety grate features are designed to reduce risk to personnel while making work on the pump station easier. One example: when a pump is removed from the wet well, it can be hoisted through the open safety grate then swung over to sit on top the closed grate. There, the pump can be hosed off, with all material draining into the wet well, before being removed for maintenance.

Ladders

An access ladder is often included in the design of a pump station vault. Sometimes this is a safety requirement, or it may be a design preference of the station owner or site engineer. Romtec Utilities supplies a variety of ladders that are incorporated into the vault design. Ladders include a sliding section that is normally stowed within the vault and is easily lifted and locked in position for use.

Steps

The concrete vault of a wet well-dry pit pump station can be equipped with steps leading to the bottom of the dry pit. This provides maintenance access to the pumps while meeting safety requirements. Romtec Utilities supplies complete safety equipment to meet all enclosed space requirements.
