Pacific Island Pump Station – Environmental Protection in Samoa
| Wastewater Lift Station | |
| SITE DETAILS The American Samoa Power Authority is upgrading its wastewater infrastructure on Tutuila Island, home of the U.S. territory’s capital, Pago Pago. Traditionally, island villages use septic systems for household sewage treatment. The close proximity to the ocean is cause for environmental concerns. The Power Authority has begun a long-term plan to convert village septic systems to municipal sewer collection feeding the island’s wastewater treatment plants. At Fatu Ma Futi village the coastline is quite flat. Ditches for piping are limited by the water table to 5 feet deep. This situation required the utility to explore alternatives to a traditional gravity sewer system. Romtec Utilities designed, supplied and delivered a package sewage pump station and assisted the Power Authority in its installation. Lateral sewer lines from village homes were tied into the precast concrete wet well and the sewage lift station began operation in September, 2006. Romtec Utilities also provided operation and maintenance training provided to the Power Authority staff. The duty point of the duplex submersible pump wastewater lift station is 119 GPM @ 32′ TDH.
